The Marksman

A marksman fires a rifle pointed horizontally (0 degrees vertical). The velocity of the bullet is 1000 ft/sec. Ignore air friction. The distance between the rifle and the ground is 3 feet. How far does the bullet travel before hitting the ground. (Hint: the marksman is on earth and not the moon).

  1. there was a lot of trouble with this one.
I went ahead with the nifty internet.
Now there is no real clue that I plugged in the right numbers in the right spots of the equation. At first, I was going to just throw in the towel and say that I had never taken physics...
    My answer is 31.62 feet.
To me, it makes no real sense especially because of my uncertainly about equation plugging.
If I am wrong, do not give the answer I will try plugging again haha

  2. BTW, I did not even seriously consider Jennifer's cake question...

  3. Kathleen, maybe show me the equation you are using so I know why you got the wrong answer.

  7. You are on a trip to a tropical island. You find out the island is inhabited by 3 tribes. As it turns out, you arrive right when the chiefs of these tribes are all meeting. One chief is wearing a blue headress, one is wearing a green one, and the 3rd is wearing a white one. One chief always tells the truth, one always tells lies, and one can either tell the truth or lie but you don't know which is which. The chiefs are very busy and only have time to answer one "yes or no" question each. Each question must be directed at ONE of the chiefs. The chiefs understand English but don't speak it, so they answer in their own language. You know that the words "da" and "ja" mean "yes" and "no", but you don't know which word means which. Taking all that into consideration, what questions will you ask the chiefs to determine who is the truth-teller, who tells lies, and who does both??

  9. One-Pot Wonder,
Are you sure I cannot ask one of the chiefs more than one question. Not sure I can solve this without asking a single chief more than one question!

  11. OK One-Pot Wonder, what is the first question and how will it determine what ja and da mean?

  14. If I ask the question:

"Does da mean yes if and only if you are Truth if and only if the chief in blue is Random?"

to the chief who lies he may say yes or no. I don't quite understand how this question will help me. Can you explain in more detail!
